Tour itinerary

1st Day | Tomar & Covilhã

Firstly, you’ll visit Tomar, a charming town that has deep roots with one of the most intriguing religious orders in the world: The Knights Templar. Once there, you can visit the Convent of Christ and Tomar Knight Templars Castle. Then, you’ll visit Monsanto Historic Village, with origins that date back to the Paleolithic period!

Next, you’ll visit Covilhã, a gateway to mainland Portugal’s highest point – Serra da Estrela. Its history, monuments, museums, and modern energy make this city a must-see! Here, you can visit The Cheese Museum. And, you’ll learn about the whole handmade manufacturing process of the famous Serra’s cheese delicacy, appreciated and recognised internationally. You will have the opportunity to taste 3 kinds of cheese and regional wine.

You will also climb up to Penhas da Saúde, a beautiful mountain village located at about 1500 meters high right in the heart of the Serra da Estrela. This village presents a breathtaking landscape especially with the arrival of winter and the frequent snowfalls.

Overnight in: Serra da Estrela

2nd Day | Serra da Estrela & Coimbra

On the second day, you’ll go up to the top of Serra da Estrela, a very famous place for snowfalls during winter. You’ll climb to the highest point of the Portugal mainland – the Tower of Serra da Estrela. It’s a very famous place for its frequent snowfalls during the winter months. On the way you will find a rock sculpture dating from 1946 and dedicated to Our Lady of Good Star, patron saint of shepherds. After some time in the Tower it’s time to start the descent.

Afterwards, you’ll visit Manteigas, a village situated about 700m above sea level, on the glacier valley of Serra da Estrela, where runs the river Zêzere. Here, you will find a unique natural beauty.

On the southwest slopes, you’ll visit Seia. Here, you can find places that invite you to practice outdoor activities: hiking, bathing in the fluvial beaches, and winter sports (we can find fantastic sky tracks). You can also visit the Bread Museum or the Toy museum.

Finally, you’ll visit Coimbra, where you’ll find the oldest university in Portugal. It is known as the city of students, offering a wonderful mix of centuries of culture and history. Here, you will take a panoramic tour, visiting the old streets of the city center and its main sights.

Other interesting places you may visit

Piódão Historic Village

One of the 12 historical villages of Portugal and also one of the schist villages, located in the Serra do Açor. It insists on remaining hidden to unexpectedly dazzle with its architecture.
