Funchal is a city with more than 500 years of history. Currently, is a very cosmopolitan city full of life! Amaze yourself with the picturesque setting of its old town, with narrow cobblestone streets, alleys, gardens, museums. Also, experience the local delioucious gastronomy.
The Funchal Town Hall is one of the most emblematic monuments of the city. This building is a harmonious example of the architecture of the end of the 18th century. Here, you can visit several rooms and an interior landscaped courtyard with a fountain with a marble statue of “Leda and the Swan”. One of the highlights of the visit is the tower, formerly used to detect possible threats to the city. Today, it is mainly used as a viewpoint to enjoy a 360-degree view of the town.
It is the city market where everyone goes to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. Here you’ll find the most beautiful flowers, exotic fruits, vegetables and souvenirs, all beautifully displayed in an attractive space with an atmosphere full of life.
Quinta da Vigia is the current official residence of the President of the Government of Madeira, built between the 16th and 20th centuries. Therefore has a baroque and neoclassical architecture with gardens that provide visitors with a beautiful view over the bay of Funchal and invite you to a pleasant walk.
Monte is a parish located east of Funchal and for many centuries, the summer refuge for many wealthy families. Today, no visit to Madeira island is complete without a traditional ride on a Sledge at Monte. This type of transportation started in 1850 and was created by the residents to arrive fast at Funchal. Each sled has two sled drivers called “Carreiros”, dressed in white pants, typical straw hat, and special rubber-soled boots so that they can stop the sledge when necessary by making use of their boots as brakes.
Cabo Girão is one of the highest cliffs in the world. It has a suspended glass platform from where you can enjoy one of the most fantastic views of the island’s cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean.
Go for a ride on a Cable car that connects Funchal to Monte and enjoy the fantastic view of Funchal bay and its surrounding landscape.
Considered one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world, Monte Palace Tropical Garden has an abundant collection of exotic plants from all over the world, acquired by José Berardo. One of the most exciting features in the garden is the existence of several tile panels with the main events of the History of Portugal, which begins with the reign of D. Afonso Henriques (1109-1185), passing through all the kings up the Third Republic, which includes the 1974 revolution and Portugal’s accession to the European Community in 1986.
Curral das Freiras is a small parish, surrounded by huge mountains, in the heart of the island of Madeira. In 1566, the nuns of the Convent of Santa Clara that escaped from pirates who attacked Funchal, found refuge here, taking with them the treasure of the convent. The isolation and the difficulties of access made Curral a place of hiding.
