How one couple helped transform emergency medical services in India

Travel often introduces us to stunning landscapes, rich cultures, and memorable moments. Occasionally, it also introduces us to extraordinary individuals. Years ago, Portugal Premium Tours welcomed a couple from India: Mr. Subroto Das and Mrs. Sushmita Das. Throughout their exploration of Portugal, they charmed everyone with their warmth, humility, and sincere kindness. What we didn’t immediately realize was that beneath their humble exteriors was an inspiring story of perseverance, resilience, and social impact. A story that would ultimately enhance emergency healthcare for millions.

How can one life-changing moment create a movement?

The journey started with tragedy. In 1999, Subroto Das lost a close friend in a road accident due to delayed emergency help. Soon after, he and his wife were involved in a serious traffic crash. Injured and stranded, they waited nearly five hours for assistance, and it took several more hours to reach medical care. While many would carry these painful memories, Subroto and Sushmita saw them as a mission.

They understood that many lives could be saved if emergency medical services were more accessible, well-organized, and available when needed most.

What happened next?

Motivated to make a difference, the couple established the Lifeline Foundation and the Highway Rescue Service in 2002. Their aim was straightforward yet ambitious: to enhance emergency medical services and decrease preventable fatalities on Indian roads. Over the subsequent years, they concentrated on developing essential components of a contemporary emergency response system, such as:

  • Emergency medical infrastructure
  •  Ambulance standards
  • Paramedic training and certification
  • Public access emergency numbers
  • EMS legislation and policy development
  • Disaster preparedness initiatives

Their efforts played a key role in developing and expanding emergency medical systems that have helped millions of people in India and beyond.

Why does this story matter today?

Because meaningful change often begins when ordinary people refuse to accept that a problem cannot be solved. The Lifeline Foundation’s efforts have influenced emergency healthcare systems in India and neighboring countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Turkey. Besides emergency response, they support communities through healthcare access programs, first-aid training, medical assistance, and disaster preparedness initiatives.

Their story shows that one person’s determination can make a profound impact beyond expectations.
