Comércio square is one of the largest squares in Europe and, for many centuries, the main entrance to the city of Lisbon. With a marvelous view of the Tagus River, Praça do Comércio extends to the unmissable Cais das Colunas. This square has many terraces and restaurants where you can enjoy the landscape and Lisbon’s pace. To get to the city center, you must go through the Rua Augusta Arch and walk along Augusta street.
Visit the top of the Rua Augusta Arch and you will have a truly unique and impressive view of Lisbon’s downtown and the Tagus River.
The Baixa neighborhood is the ‘heart’ of Lisbon. Baixa had to be rebuilt with neoclassical-style buildings and with an innovative anti-seismic structure after the massive earthquake of 1755. Its streets are covered in a Portuguese style pavement made with small flat pieces of stones arranged in a pattern or image like a mosaic.
Located on the highest hill of Lisbon and with a marvelous view over the city, it’s one of the most emblematic monuments of Lisbon and home of the Portuguese royalty for centuries. This military fort was built by the Moors in the 11th century and was conquered by the first king of Portugal Dom Afonso Henriques on October 25th of 1147.
The 13th century-old Saint Dominic’s church was the first Dominican church of Lisbon. For centuries it was the most important church in Lisbon where beautiful royal weddings and christenings were held. The church has been destroyed on several occasions by earthquakes and a brutal fire in 1959. Its impressive interior decorated in gilded woodcarvings and valuable paintings were destroyed. It reopened in 1994 and the marks of the fire were left exposed on the church walls giving it a unique and fascinating atmosphere.
The most traditional and oldest neighborhood of Lisbon composed of a maze of narrow streets, tortuous alleys, and steep flights of stairs. It’s the birthplace of ‘Fado’, the traditional song of Lisbon classified as World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Alfama is known internationally for its Fado Houses and the Popular Saints’ Festival held in Lisbon throughout June.
