But its story goes far beyond beauty or age. The Whistler represents one of Portugal’s most important traditions: the cork industry.

A Tree with an Extraordinary Story

This remarkable cork oak is more than 230 years old and has been classified as a Tree of Public Interest since 1988. Over its lifetime, it has been harvested more than twenty times. In one exceptional harvest, it produced around 1,200 kilograms of cork, enough to create more than 100,000 cork stoppers. To understand how impressive that is, one must remember that cork is not obtained by cutting down the tree. It comes from the bark. And after each harvest, the bark grows back naturally. That is what makes cork one of Portugal’s most sustainable natural materials.

The 234-year-old cork tree has won first place in the “European Tree of the Year 2018” contest and has been classified as a “Tree of Public Interest” since 1988.

Why Is Cork So Important in Portugal?

Cork has been used for centuries. The Romans and Egyptians used it for fishing equipment, footwear, and containers. In medieval times, monks used cork to insulate their rooms from heat and cold. During the Portuguese Discoveries, cork was used in ships, and later, wine producers discovered its remarkable ability to preserve bottles through cork stoppers.

Today, cork is used in wine, fashion, design, architecture, flooring, insulation, aerospace technology, and even sustainability-focused innovation. It is resistant, flexible, biodegradable, renewable, and recyclable.

It has been harvested over twenty times and produces more cork annually than other cork trees in a lifetime. A cork oak must grow for around 25 years before its bark can be harvested for the first time.
