A 16th Century Fort that played a tactical role in reinforcing the Portuguese coastline, whipped by pirates from northern Europe and Africa. Currently operating as a Pousada de Portugal, it has a baroque chapel, covered with tiles, dated 1736, by Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes, depicting scenes from the life of Saint Filipe.
From its walls you’ll have the most breathtaking panoramic view of the city and the bay.
It’s the longest bridge in Portugal and Europe and one of the largest in the world. It has a total length of 17,345 meters, of which 12,000 meters are on the waters of the Tagus Estuary.
It is also one of the highest constructions in Portugal, with 155 meters of height.
Occupied by the Islamic between the VIII and XII centuries, the Castle of Palmela was conquered by D. Afonso Henriques in 1147 and is a National Monument since 1910. From the walls of the Castle you’ll have an astonishing 360º view.
